Here in Year 1 at St Patrick’s, our aim is to ensure that every child has the opportunity to flourish and make a smooth transition into Key Stage 1. While we have a busy year ahead, there will also be plenty of opportunities for laughter, excitement, and memorable experiences – including our trip to Warwick Castle in the Spring Term!
This year, we are extending the children’s transition time by adopting a similar approach to Reception. The children will have access to indoor and outdoor environments set up for continuous provision, which supports and challenges learning across all areas. The provision will be enhanced throughout the year to reflect children’s interests, current topics, and learning needs.
Year 1 is particularly important because the children will complete the Phonics Screening Check in June. The Phonics Screening Check is a 1:1 assessment of their ability to recognise, use, and apply their phonics knowledge. To support, we encourage regular phonics practise at home. We are always happy to offer further guidance if needed.
Reading is a key focus in Year 1. We will be changing reading books and hearing your children read every week. Please ensure they have their book and diary with them every day and read with them at home as regularly as possible. Their home reading book will match the phonics sounds they have been working on in school.
